AbstractThis report is a brief introduction to the organizations of the local gentry in Shanxi province. In the age of constitutional reform, local gentries were motivated to take in charge the reforms of education, self-government, economics and charity. They were elected by local people or appointed by local governments. In terms of rights, they were allowed to address questions to officials and to impose fines on common people; they had also rights to raise money for the reforms, make suggestions and reports, and compile local compacts. Their term of office could be one year or three years, and some of them could be replaced any time; they could withdraw or could be dismissed by their constituencies or the local governments if they misbehaved.
