Short titleB3853300 (10)
Topic2.1 Judicial cases: general casebooks
Historical periodLate Qing (1797-1911)
Publication typeWoodblock
CommentRem.: Possibly three different hand copies of the same compilation. According to the description (see below), in the one at Faxue suo (which has no mulu and no page numbers) each entry indicates the name of the Ministry of Justice department which treated the case and the year (only occasionally giving the era name, Jiaqing or Daoguang; the period covered seems to be 1813-1823), followed by a fairly simplified presentation of the case and of the decision. The margins feature the designation of the crime discussed. The order followed is that of the penal code. The copy at Ōki responds to the same description. In that copy the relevant statutes have been neatly written on large labels pasted on the cover of each fascicle. The copy at Columbia also appears identical in content, but it is preceded by a mulu consisting of a list of the statutes in the Code, limited to those to which there are corresponding entries in the text; it starts each case on a new folio (whereas in the Ōki version the cases pertaining to a given statute are written without any break), but never provides the era name, only the year number. The entries are mostly “communications” from the bureau in question (text starting with zi 咨), but a few are memorials (text starting with ti 題). (phtgr. début ex. Oki)
Ed.: *Undated MSS in several versions. [*Ōki, covering the years 1813-23]
