A remarkably informed and pondered book on Qing law just before its disparition. Ernest Alabaster, a lawyer employed by Chinese customs, was the son of Chalomer Alabaster, who stayed in China as Consul for over 40 years. The son composed the volume after the notes left by the father. As the former explains, he followed the "logic" of English Common law and procedure to expose Chinese law, and nonetheless succeeded in presenting the best book on this topic by a Western author at this time.
