Not strictly speaking a gongdu collection, this comparatively short work is an informal and lively record of the author’s experiences. It includes judicial cases handled while serving at the Ministry of Justice after the Chinese authorities had regained control of the administration of justice following the occupation of Beijing by the Eight-Nation forces in 1900. Problems of extraterritoriality and relations with foreigners, as well as problems of law and order in the capital, are frequently mentioned. Further entries concern the author’s functions in Kaifeng (see below).
